Review: Eye of the Storm

Eye of the Storm
Eye of the Storm by Denise Moncrief

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Eye of the Storm is a romantic suspense novella featuring a Category 3 storm and some very secretive characters. I don't generally read romantic suspense fiction, so this was a real treat for me. This romance is a kind of dark, introspective account of Kieran Talbot (a woman in hiding from something or someone), and it also has plenty of implied and explicit violence. When a man claiming to be Davis Jackson enters her life, complications, and danger, follow. Ms. Moncrief (author of "Snow White and the Seven Dogs" in the Unleashed Hearts collection) isn't afraid to make her characters suffer as she weaves together all the pertinent details in a tight, well-written plot. Fans of the genre will thoroughly enjoy this romantic suspense.

Giovanna's Dilemma Release Week Giveaways!

This week, in celebration of my new release, I'm running a contest to give away a copy of my sweet contemporary/historical romance Giovanna's Dilemma. Also, I want to try out the rafflecopter giveaway ap. ;-)

BLURB
When JP takes Karen out to celebrate their four-month dating anniversary, he wines and dines her at Jean Q's, London's best restaurant. After a wonderful meal, he has another surprise for her: his prepared lecture at the National Gallery, where he presents Karen with a unique and entertaining interpretation of the love story between feisty Giovanna Cenami and Pieter Baes, Jan van Eyck's young assistant at the time van Eyck painted the famous Arnolfini Betrothal Portrait.

EXCERPT
"Ooh. I get to see my man at work! I love it. Come on, big guy, let's hear this amazing lecture. Educate me." I wrapped my hands around his neck and whispered seductively.
JP stared at me, his face turning shades of red. He was so much fun! I could do this forever. I kissed his cheek and released him.
"I hope you like it. It's a special lecture. I wrote it with you in mind. In fact, wrote it for you."
"Aw . . . that's so sweet! But keep the technical details down to a minimum, would you? Unlike you, I haven't been studying Art History for the last sixteen years."
"Great!" JP turned me around, and we walked to an empty bench set against the back wall.
He sat down beside me. At a distance of some twenty-odd feet, van Eyck's work looked completely different than when I stood up close.
"I thought we could start from back here and then move up, you know, to change our perspective."
"Of course, because perspective is everything in life, isn't it, sweetie?" I patted his hand encouragingly.
Slipping into lecture mode, JP took my hand, much in the same way the fur-coated man held the preggo's hand in the painting; I was touched to see how nervous he was. This sweet, passionate man, who researched and lectured on art for a living!
He cleared his throat. "This is one of van Eyck's most famous masterpieces. It tells a very romantic story."
"Really? That stodgy guy doesn't look like much of a romantic," I said.
JP chuckled. "Oh, no. This painting doesn't merely depict a romance between Giovanna Cenami and Giovanni Arnolfini."
I thought about this while I studied the painting. "Well, the only other thing is that little terrier standing guard between the couple. And this is a portrait painting. I know that much from having dated you these past months."
"Ah . . . the lady doth listen."
I teased him. "Of course the lady listens! Just because she doesn't care doesn't mean she doesn't listen. So, tell me then, oh learned one, where is the romance in this painting, if it isn't between the old man and the young woman whose hand he's holding?"
"Allow me to show you." With a wry smile, he launched into the love story of Pieter Baes and Giovanna Cenami.

Review: Crazy Emma

Crazy Emma
Crazy Emma by Brandie Buckwine

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"Crazy Emma" is a short, 10-12 page, quirky sensual romance. I enjoyed everything about it: the author's creative mastery of the genre, the unusual setting, Emma and Derrick (the fun, sexy characters), and the confident writing. I would definitely read more of Ms Buckwine's saucy romances.

Review: Unleashed Hearts

Unleashed Hearts
Unleashed Hearts by Denise Moncrief

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Unleashed Hearts features dog-related romantic tales by three Still Moments Publishing authors Darlene Henderson, Katriena Knights, and Denise Moncrief.

The romantic "tales" vary in length and all are sweet. Each story has an adorable hunk, a lovely heroine, and at least one dog of questionable lineage.

In the first romance, Dog Day Afternoon, Jessica meets Ewan after he captures escapee Buster. Her teen idol, she last saw Ewan singing on a stage eleven years earlier and, although sparks fly between them, this just isn't the right time for either of them to embark on a new romance. Or is it?

In the second romance, Accidental Evenings by Katriena Knights, Cleo keeps escaping from her yard to lounge on the neighbor's porch, forcing hermit-like Mandy to finally meet the new neighbor. He's a suave, sophisticated, and polished professor of Eastern European fiction. As Mandy accompanies him to a faculty get-together she wonders, is he maybe a little too polished?

The third, Snow White and the Seven Dogs, my favorite in the collection, is Denise Moncrief's imaginative modern retelling of the classic children's tale. Yes, the heroine's name really is Snow White and yes, there's a charming Prince, and also some bad apples. Did I mention the seven adorable dogs? Evil is most certainly running afoot in the family orchard. Can Snow prevail?

I enjoyed this collection of canine-themed stories and I look forward to reading more romances from these authors.

I Got the Coveted Versatile Blogger Award

That's right, I just got the coveted Versatile Blogger Award!

Now for the rules:

Thank the Nominator. Not the "De"nominator, that's a whole other kettle of fish. :-)
Then share 7 things about yourself, and pass the award along to 15 bloggers you love to read.

So, here goes:

Thank you Veronica Sicoe for thinking of me. I can't give this award to her, but I would if I could. Read her blog, people! She is funny (so funny!) and witty, and very smart!

7 Things about Myself
  1. I love to write love stories.
  2. Besides romance novellas, I also write literary/commercial and commercial/romance novels.
  3. None of my novels have been published, yet, although I did cancel a novel contract.
  4. I'm both an "indie" and a "house" published author.
  5. I have a four-sequel pararomance novella series in the works (#2 comes out June 25)
  6. I love to write tragedies where some/most of the characters die
  7. I'm discovering that publishers do not like tragedies where the main characters die...
Believe it or not, this is the most I've shared about myself on this blog.

Now, on to the 15 bloggers to whom I am passing the Versatile Blogger Award. I hope they will accept the award in the same spirit of fun and gratitude I am passing it on but, as wise Veronica states, "You wonderful guys who’ve earned the award can go ahead and post it, or you can just accept the award and continue going about your awesome business. I’ll be around you anyway, because you’re great at what you do." My feelings exactly! And to those of you who may already have one (or several Versatile Blogger Awards), this just goes to show how versatile people think you are!

Review: Have You Seen Her?

Have You Seen Her?
Have You Seen Her? by Chicki Brown

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Chicki Brown's Have You Seen Her? has it all: a strong heroine in Dani Reynolds, a to-die-for handsome hero by the name of Taylor Villanova *sigh*, and a tightly-woven plot that focuses on the twin modern plagues of addiction and spouse abuse!

Ms Brown takes us on a cross-country trip as Marcia/Dani leaves her abusive husband in California to return to her grass roots on the Atlantic Coast. She sets out to bury her violence-filled past and does a good job of it. But when she falls for a handsome man (Villanova) who makes his living beating up people as a bouncer at Frenzy, the bar where Dani has found work as a cocktail waitress, she begins to question her judgement in men. Is Dani bound to repeat past mistakes? Can she trust Taylor's motives, his sweet words, and the rage that seethes just beneath the surface? Will the abusive husband she risked everything to escape from remain in the past?

This was the first of Ms. Brown's novels that I have read and I can't wait to read more. Tense, well-written, with great characters, I want to be taken on another of Ms brown's journeys as soon as possible!
